Worship: Tagore’s Bangla Devotional Songs in English Verse – I

Every day, O Lord of My Life! Shall I face Thee;

Folded hands, O Lord of the Worlds! Shall I face Thee.

Neath Thine endless skies, in solitude and seclusion, Lord!

With a humble heart and tearful eyes, shall I face Thee.

On this earth, Thy variegated samsara,

On the shores of the Sea of Karma,

Amidst peoples of the whole wide world,

Shall I stand before Thee, and Thee alone!

And when on Thine earth my role shall find a closure,

O King of Kings! I, lonesome and silent, shall face Thee.

II

Protidino Tabo Gāthā Gābo Ᾱmi Śumodhur

(Click here to listen to the original Bangla song)

Every day, to Thee, dulcet hymns shall I croon –

Pray give me Thy words for it, and give me Thy tune!

If Thou would stay in my heart, seated on its lotus bloom,

If Thou would make my life in Thine affection subsumed,

Every day, to Thee, dulcet hymns shall I croon!

If Thou would remain afore me and heed this my song,

If Thy benignant eyes grant the nectar for which I long,

If Thou would place a loving hand upon my deepest grief,

If Thou would wrest all conceit off me, when in joy I swoon,

Every day, to Thee, dulcet hymns shall I croon!
