 Two Songs of Tagore – XII

ɑːntɑːre jāgicho ɑːntɑːrojāmī

Within You’re keeping vigil, O Indweller,

And yet I keep drifting afar, for ever.

I have embraced this world’s comfort,

And yet my life is Yours, my Lord!

Blind to the path, I wander in vain,

Conceited, thro’ this world without end.

And yet those fond eyes as Polaris remain

Awake – as Thy blessèd graces descend.

ɑːnimeṣo ā͂khi śei ke dekheche

Those Unblinking Eyes – who indeed has beheld them,

The Eyes that gaze upon the world in aeternum

The sun, the moon, the planets and stars ne’er go astray

For their own eyes, upon the Eyes of That One, they did lay.

Why do I, being so fearful, wander in the dark with tearful eyes –

Not caring to gaze upon the firmament that within my own heart lies?

The eternal light from the Eyes of That One shines there for ever;

Could it be that the clouds of saṃsāra have obscured mine eyes?
